Considerations

Deciding whether to bring more dogs into this world requires serious contemplation. Finding suitable homes and having the time and skill to mentor your puppy homes is incredibly important in the success of happy ownership of these guys. Furthermore, breeding Bull Terriers is far more difficult and complicated than other breeds; it is not for the faint of heart and not a decision to be made lightly. Whether you free whelp, choose to have a c-section or end up having an emergency c-section, having a litter of Bull Terrier puppies is incredibly hard work. It can also be incredibly rewarding. Remember to expect the unexpected!

Here are some questions you can ask yourself when trying to determine if breeding is right for you and your girl:

What is my motivation and what are my goals in breeding ?

Does my bitch have exceptional virtues that can improve the breed and/or is she integral to my breeding program?

Does she have the genetics and a pedigree worth passing on to future generations ?

Has my bitch passed all the necessary health testing ?

Does my bitch have a sound temperament?

Does she have the right temperament to be a good mother ?

Does the stud dog have a complimentary temperament ?

Have I researched the health and temperament of the offspring the stud dog has produced and factored into the equation what the dams of those litters were like ?

Do I have a knowledgeable and experienced mentor who has successfully bred Bull Terriers for an extended period of time who is willing to support and guide me ?

Can I afford the cost of breeding my bitch (health testing, progesterone testing and cytology, stud fee, shipping of semen, fees associated with insemination) and the cost of having a litter (possible c- section, several weeks off   work when pups are born, BAER testing, vaccinations/vet exams/deworming/microchips for the puppies, the additional cost of food and supplies for a litter of pups) ?

Do I have the time necessary to whelp and rear a litter of Bull Terrier puppies? (four weeks laying by the whelping box and at least another 4 weeks teaching, training, socializing and preparing your pups for their new homes).

Do I have the skills to teach my bitch to be a good mother and the focus to never leave her unattended with her puppies ?

Do I have the ability to find great homes for my puppies ?

Do I have the time, ability and knowledge to mentor my homes ?

Do I have a sales contract and health guarantee for my homes ?

Can I afford the cost of replacing puppies if there is an issue down the road ?

Am I able to take back puppies when a home is no longer able or willing to keep them ?

As you embark on this journey please remember to be honest with yourself when you are assessing your dogs and determining whether to breed them.
